Now, the NIACC sophomore basketball player will follow in his father’s footsteps.
Clausen, a native of Australia, signed a national letter of intent on Monday to play basketball next season at the University of North Dakota.
“Ever since my dad played in college, it’s been my No. 1 goal to play Division I basketball.”
First-year NIACC coach Mark Mohl, whose team is 5-0 and plays at Rochester Community College tonight, said Clausen deserves the opportunity.
“They are very happy for Chris,” Mohl said. “He has worked very hard to earn a spot on a Division I team.”
Clausen, a 6-foot-6 forward, was recruited to NIACC by former coach Bryan Martin.
Martin also played a hand in recruiting Clausen to North Dakota, a school in its first season of NCAA Division I basketball.
Clausen admitted he didn’t know what to think when Martin accepted the assistant job at North Dakota last summer.
“I was kind of sad,” Clausen said. “I didn’t really know what was going to happen, but coach Mohl is a great coach and I’m happy here.”
Clausen said he stayed in contact with Martin once he left for North Dakota.
“We spoke during the summer and during the season,” Clausen said.
Another reason Clausen had an interest in North Dakota was his father played at the school and was inducted into the school’s hall of fame last year.
“They are very excited for him to not only get to play at this level,” Mohl said, “but to also get the opportunity to play for the same school that his dad once did, where he holds Hall of Fame honors. This is something very well deserved.”
Clausen admitted that once North Dakota showed interest in him, he didn’t really consider too many other schools.
“North Dakota is the perfect fit for me,” he said.
