NIACC topped Riverland Community College 99-88 in a men’s junior college basketball contest by outscoring the Blue Devils 19-8 in the 5-minute extra session.
“They finally missed some shots,” first-year NIACC coach Mark Mohl said. “They shot the lights out.
“Credit them, they did a heck of a job. They came down here and outplayed us most of the night. We absorbed the hits and finally got over the hump and that’s a credit to our guys, too.”
The game was tied 80-80 at the end of regulation but NIACC (3-0) scored the first nine points of the overtime to take control of the contest.
NIACC struggled shooting from the field most of the contest, but connected on 6 of 8 shots from the field in the extra session.
“We got off to a good start and got a layup off the tip,” Mohl said. “The kids did a good job of reacting to that.
“We finally started to attack the ball inside out against that zone. Early in the game, we were just too happy shooting 3s.”
Sophomore point guard James Henderson led NIACC with a near triple-double (20 points, 10 assists and nine steals).
Henderson was 3 of 3 from the field in the overtime.
“He played a great game,” Mohl said of his 5-foot-5 guard from Maplewood, Minn. “He just creates so many problems. Not only is he very quick, but he’s also very strong.
“He’s played a lot of basketball in his life so he understands the situations.”
NIACC also received 21 points from Chris Clausen. Max Papendieck scored 16 points, Kyle Cooper scored 13 points and Joe Speth added 12 points.
Mohl, whose team returns to action Saturday at the Dale Howard Classic in Iowa Falls, said his team can learn a lot from Tuesday’s nonconference victory.
“I think we can learn that we’re not doing a very good job of playing defense,” the coach said. “So we’re going to readjust some things with that.
“We’ll try and help them understand the importance of defense in practice (today).”
