Course Description:
This course will help the student become an
effective communicator in the business world. Basic written
communication will be emphasized through practice in grammar structure,
vocabulary building, and organization of thoughts. These skills will
then be implemented when the student plans and writes business letters
and interoffice memorandums. A secondary emphasis will be placed on
oral communication, listening skills, and nonverbal communication.

Some of the exams in this course need to be taken at an approved "proctored" testing site such as the Student Learning Center at NIACC, a local library, Area Education Agency, or the Human Resources Office at your place of employment. Business Communications Course Procedures
Communication with the instructor is imperative in this course. Students can contact the instructor via e-mail or telephone regarding any questions or concerns they may have. Unless a student indicates immediate need for communication, the instructor will respond to all messages no later than Friday of each week.
Assignments are accessed through a Calendar of Assignments on the instructor's home page. Due dates are specified on a weekly basis, and all assignments are due by midnight unless a student has made PRIOR arrangements for an extension. (For a detailed view of the Calendar of Assignments, go to http://staff.niacc.edu/dfrank/, click on the Calendar of Assignments under the Business Communications (online) section.) Students can submit assignments to the instructor via e-mail, standard mail, or by taking them to the instructor's office.
Tests are taken through a WebCT and are available to the students for a week. After the week has passed, students are not allowed to take the test(s).
Oral Presentation. Each student MUST prepare and present an oral presentation to the instructor either by videotape or in person. A student will NOT pass the course if he/she does not complete this project.
