Purpose: This course is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to discuss and demonstrate neonatal resuscitation skills: initial steps, immediate post-delivery care, equipment use, chest compressions, ET intubation, medications, special considerations, resuscitation of the pre-term baby, and effective communication during the decision-making process based on the 2005 Update.

Program Objectives: *Discuss the principles of resuscitation. *Discuss and demonstrate the initial phase of managing the neonate in need of resuscitation and providing care immediately after delivery. *Discuss and demonstrate proper use of the resuscitation bag and mask, ventilation of the infant mannequin and use of ventilation in the resuscitation process. *Demonstrate proper chest compressions of the infant mannequin. *Discuss and demonstrate assisting with infant intubation and intubation of the infant head. *Discuss proper emergency medication preparation, usage, concentration, dosage and routes for the infant in need of resuscitation. *Discuss the special situations and ethical considerations required on resuscitation. *Discuss issues related to resuscitation of the pre-term baby. *Discuss effective communication with parents during the decision-making process. *Participate in a megacode incorporating all principles of resuscitation. *Successful completion of this course includes 85% or more on all written examinations and skill stations.
